A Close Look at Astilbe Fanal

A great plant to grow in zones 3 to 8, one that grows to nearly two feet tall, has a one-foot spread, and produces vibrant flowers is called Astilbe Fanal.  This perennial is ideal for gardens, flowerbeds, and standalone flowers that will brighten any outdoor area.  However, the flowers are often cut and used to create beautiful floral bouquets to enjoy indoors.  Additionally, flowers from the Astilbe Fanal plant naturally attract birds, butterflies, and bees.

To grow Astilbe Fanal, the soil needs to be well drained and the plant located where it will get partial sun and partial shade.  This particular plant loves moist, organic soil and it is important that the soil be watered on a regular basis and not allowed to dry out.  This will allow the foliage to grow strong and beautiful all season.  Then in the summertime, place mulch around the base of the Astilbe Fanal, which will assist in keeping the soil moist.

If you ever notice any of the flower stalks becoming faded or dying, they need to be deadheaded, which involves pinching off the flower head.  This will keep the plant looking beautiful while also encouraging new growth.  Now, some people like the look of the dried flowers so if you find it creates a unique appearance that appeals to you, then you could avoid the process of deadheading.

The Astilbe Fanal is a clump forming plant that features fern-like mounds of approximately three compound leaves.  These leaves are typically covered with toothed leaflets, as well as small flowers that are packed in tight.  The flowers grow tall, which then begin to arch.  This plume appearance is gorgeous, especially with the flowers rising above the foliage on slim stems.  You will find that many different species and hybrids depending on the look you prefer.  Even the overall size of the Astilbe Fanal plant varies based on the species chosen.

The Astilbe Fanal is an early bloomer, producing beautiful flowers during the late spring months.  The flowers of this species are dark red, featuring small astilbes.  Complimenting the flowers is foliage with a copper coloring.  At maturity, the stems and flower grow up to about 18 inches tall.  During the summer, the bronze foliage begins to change to a dark green color that has just a slight touch of red.

One of the benefits of the Astilbe Fanal plant is that problems associated with disease or insects is rare.  This is relatively an easy plant to grow and because it can grow as a standalone plant or in groupings, it provides beauty for all homes.  However, the Astilbe Fanal  is often seen growing around cottages and in country settings.  In fact, many rural areas where there is a gentle stream or pond will use Astilbe Fanal  as an accent around the water.  If you want to add color but in a plant that has the appearance of a wildflower, the Astilbe Fanal would be an excellent choice.
